Asthma treated with Chinese medicine
Asthma is a chronic respiratory disease characterized by bronchial hyper-responsiveness, increased mucus production, narrowing of airways, and airway remodeling. Clinic symptoms include repeated episodes of cough, shortness of breath, wheezing, chest tightness, and chest pain. Some acute and severe cases can be life-threaten.
Ireland has the 4th highest prevalence of asthma worldwide. One in eight of the population of Irish people has been affected by asthma according to HSE. Asthma is most common respiratory condition in Ireland and the commonest chronic disease in childhood. Approximately 470,000 Irish people have suffered from asthma. HSE statistic shows over 5,000 admissions per year with principal diagnosis of asthma and more than 22,000 admissions per year with secondary diagnosis of asthma in Ireland.
The main causes of asthma are not fully understood. The risk factors for asthma are the following triggers including indoor allergens for example household dust mites in bedding, carpets and plush furniture, pollution and pet dander; outdoor allergens such as the pollen and mold; tobacco smoke; chemical irritants in the workplace. Other triggers may include extreme emotions such as anger or fear, cold air, and physical exercise. In some people, asthma may even be induced by certain medications, such as aspirin and other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and ß-blockers used for the treatment of high blood pressure, heart disease, and migraine.
In traditional Chinese medicine, the cause of asthma may relate to external environment factors such as cold and dampness, especially Irish cold and damp weather. Spring and winter are the most likely seasons for asthma in Ireland. Internal causes my related to lung qi deficient, spleen and kidney qi deficient etc. Acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine have great benefits in preventing and treating asthma for over thousand years. Zhang zhongjing (张仲景) is one of the famous physicians in Chinese medicine. He has developed and established Chinese medicine theory and formula for treatment of asthma, which is still effective and widely used by modern Chinese physicians.
Some research has shown that herbal medicine combined with routine pharmacotherapy medication improve asthma outcomes greater than pharmacotherapy medication alone (Shergis et al: Herbal medicine for adults with asthma: A Systematic Review. J Asthma 2016 Aug; 53 (6):650-9). The Chinese herbal medicine and acupuncture have shown some effectiveness in asthma treatment by reducing asthma symptoms, enhancing patient’s immune functions to reduce allergy reaction that caused asthma, and also improving lung functions.
We have noticed that some cases in our clinic have suffered life time long asthma; however, after few weeks or months of the combined acupuncture and herbal medicine treatment, they have fully been recovered and stopped the life long time pharmacotherapy medication. We have also found that children with asthma are recovered better with the combined acupuncture and herbal medicine treatment.
